Hệ thống thông tin đất đai ra đời mở ra một hướng tiếp cận mới trong công tác quản lý nguồn tài nguyên đất. Với khả năng thu nhận, lưu trữ, quản lý, xử lý, mô hình hoá, thể hiện mối liên kết giữa dữ liệu thuộc tính và dữ liệu không gian, đồng thời có khả năng trao đổi với người sử dụng, hệ thống đã đáp ứng được yêu cầu chặt chẽ về tính không gian và tính pháp lý. Bên cạnh đó, Hệ thống thông tin đất đai còn là một hệ thống mở, cho phép sử dụng các công cụ lập trình để xây dựng các ứng dụng phù hợp với thực tiễn của công tác quản lý đất.
